The Sparrows have been embracing British Science Week this week and were so enthusiastic to take part in the 'Gummy Bear Investigation'. It raised lots of questions, ensuring the children were being curious and they thought carefully about their predictions of what might happen to each gummy bear in the 5 different types of liquids. They had the ideas some may shrink, may expand, they even thought the gummy bears might explode. The children were then introduced to the term 'fair testing' and discussed ways in which the investigation would be fair by using the same number of gummy bears per cup, the same amount of liquid and leaving for the same amount of time.
Following on from discussions and predictions we completed the investigation as a class, placing 1 gummy bear in each of the 5 cups and then filling those cups with a different liquid; diluted washing up liquid, salt water, plain water, lemonade and vinegar. The cups were then placed on the side and left for 24 hours before the children discussed their findings. Some had almost dissolved, some had shrunk and others had changed colour! The awe and wonder moment was so lovely to see!
