EYFS Celebrate Chinese New Year 🧧

February 25, 2026

Every afternoon this week, EYFS have been learning all about Chinese New Year and why it is a special day for some. There have been lots of arts and crafts including making collage lanterns and creating horses as it is, of course, the year of the horse. To encourage fine motor the children have been using tweezers to sort pom poms into both takeaway boxes and ice cube trays and also had the opportunity to use scissors to cut coloured spaghetti. It has been messy but fun!

One of the most loved inside activities has been the children learning how to say and write their names in Mandarin. Mrs Lamport did a fantastic job at using Miss Wiley and Miss Warden's name as an example for anyone who participated in the Sparrow's classroom! Whilst the most loved outside activity was definitely our obstacle course. The children have been competing in their own 'race' just like the 12 animals of the zodiac and some even tried travelling like the different animals. We have had hopping rabbits between the hoops, a slithering snake sliding along the bench and a fierce tiger prowling. This has also allowed the children to show off their gross motor skills, another very important area in EYFS.
