This half term we have been exploring the world around us! We have made our very own tectonic plate puzzles, name initial patterns, tree paintings, plasticine volcanoes, flower crowns and weather magnets.

Whilst having a lot of crafty fun, we have been learning lots of new information. Did you know?

  • There’s a place in Iceland where you can stand and even swim between two tectonic plates.
  • The tallest tree in the world is currently a Redwood nicknamed “Hyperion”. Found in California’s Redwood National Park, it stands at a ginormous 115 metres! That’s about the same as 20 giraffes stacked on top of each other!
  • Animals use patterns for survival. They are used by animals like tigers to help them blend in with their surroundings. This allows them to sneak up on their prey. They are also used by prey animals to help them escape.
  • The largest volcano in our solar system is called Olympus Mons and it can be found on Mars.
  • There is a species of flower that only blooms at night! The tropical white morning-glory or moonflower only opens at night- during the day its petals stay tightly closed!
  • Lightning is hotter than the Sun! When lightning bolts crackle across the sky, they’re a toasty 30,000ºC - that’s five times hotter than the Sun!
During the upcoming Summer term, we are looking forward to exploring new information and new artistic skills!
