Segmenting, Blending, Fine Motor and Letter Formation in the Sparrows!

September 29, 2026

The learning and progress in the Sparrows over the last 2 weeks has been amazing! So far the children are becoming familiar with the sounds 's,a,t,p,i,n' and will also be introduced to 'm and d' this week. This is allowing the children to gain confidence when segmenting simple words like 'tap' and 'pat'. They have been segmenting and blending during Phonics and are now able to apply this with their newly issued reading books!

In order to embed the learning in the classroom, many activities have been set up around the provision to promote these sounds. The children loved sorting real life objects into buckets using the initial sounds as well as pictures onto bingo cards. They have been mark making in paint with their fingers and on their whiteboards to strengthen those fingers and encourage letter formation. Pencil grip has been a big focus and we have been encouraging the tripod grip each time we pick up a pencil.

Finally the children were using their fine motor skills alongside team work to create bridges for the goats after reading 'The Billy Goats Gruff' this week! They have shown resilience and we have all been very impressed!
