Black History Month in the Kingfishers

October 22, 2025

This Black History Month, the Kingfishers have been learning about two inspirational figures from Black history.

We explored the courageous story of Ruby Bridges, the first African-American child to attend an all-white school after desegregation. The children were deeply inspired by her bravery and resilience at such a young age.

We also discovered the work of Jean-Michel Basquiat, a groundbreaking American artist known for his expressive and energetic style. Basquiat loved to listen to music while he created his art, and we followed his example by letting music guide the marks and colours we used in our own artwork.

It was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate Black history, creativity, and courage.
